about

American Art Song is a musical work of art that formed the centerpiece at The Lincoln Center Institute for some professional development workshops for graduate education students during the 2010-11 season. The program also toured 15 schools in The New York area. The songs that make up this program offer a vibrant aural and verbal overview of this art form across four centuries, in the process touching on key moments in American history and culture. For example, My Days Have Been So Wondrous Free was written by Francis Hopkinson, one of the signers of the Declaration of Independence, and is considered by many to be the first secular, English-language song composed on American soil. And the poetry of Langston Hughes has been set to music by composers Margaret Bonds (for the song I, Too, part of her Three Dream Portraits) and Lowell Liebermann (for his trilogy Three Dream Songs). Witness by Hall Johnson is a setting of an American Negro spiritual. And there’s much, much more!
